Headline Your Way to a Profitable Website
“The money is in the list” is the mantra of a lot of internet marketers. Before the list there’s traffic and to catch the traffic you need to get their attention. Enter the headline.
There I was checking out my InstantBuzz stats and pleasantly surprised how many time my ad was seen only to be dismayed when I saw NO ONE clicked. The problem got worse as I started doing promotional mails with ListJoe and ListMachine and realized my emails were drab and dull.
Later I’ll get together some resources for effective headline creation. For now KNOW the fact that all the list building methods you have stored on your hard drive, right next to the credit card bills they created, means nothing if you don’t have effective attention grabbing headlines to produce clicks to your site. The dirty secret is it requires a bit of copy writing skill, practice and testing.
My lesson was learned a after I got a bunch of list building and traffic generating ebooks, a whole bunch of cool web2.0 tools, bought into a couple of list building services,.and saw an increase in credit card bills but not my list. What does this tell us? Revisit my post on the 90/10 rule for a profitable website to refresh your memory.
Testing different headline reveals what works. The more you test the headlines you write the better your idea you get of what works is found. InstantBuzz is great for this because you can have multiple campaigns running if your a PRO member. If you go that route I suggest you get it when you sign up as the price is higher after. After I got my first 500 views with no clicks, or conversions, I realized I needed to change the headline.
On the other side of the click was the squeeze page and that wasn’t doing so well either. Now I had the double problem at both points but it’s really the SAME problem of headlines. Being a work at home internet marketing business person with no skills in marketing has taught me this lesson. The internet may be all about technology but internet marketing is all about marketing. We have to apply traditional marketing techniques in the specific realm of the internet and take advantage of that realm’s attributes.
Just figured I’d show a real world example. Off to find some free and not so free resources so we all can own a profitable website.
