Internet Marketing Meets The Infomercial
When it comes to making websites profitable no one can outclass internet marketing’s “make money online” niche. After continually growing sales for 10 or more years, Guru Marketers have taken a page from late night television to boost sales: enter the 30 second landing page infomercial. It’s a new twist on a proven sales tactic only the internet can deliver.
We’ve all been there. It’s 3:30am and all that’s on TV is the 30 minute infomercial. We sit there not really interested but by some magic we end up engaged in watching the whole thing. When it’s over we wonder if it’s worth the measly 29.95. “How bad could it be?”, we ask ourselves. “It’s only 30 bucks” (or whatever price it is). The odd part is we never had any thought of buying that stuff before we watched.
Internet marketers have figured how to take the 30 minute infomercial, generate the same kind of urgency and desire, and deliver it in 30 seconds. The “spot” comes up automatically a site is entered (the landing page), and boy is it polished. background music is playing with a “radio voice” and pictures pretty women directing the “viewer” to enter their name and email in a way only a game show game show cutie can appreciate.
Internet marketers have taken the infomercial and shoe horned it onto a website. I came across a few and as I watched I kept waiting to here some magician say “…and now my lovely assistant…”. It didn’t happen, but I sure felt it was coming.
I knew what was going on and I still felt the urge to put in my name and email. These spots are polished so there is some big money behind them. It’s expected the commercial would find it’s way to the internet sooner or later and for the most part it has. Video on websites is the big thing for 2007 and something as simple as home grown a-la You Tube video, when monetized, can easily get you a profitable website.
The internet marketing community knows the traffic pulling power of video and they’ve merged it with infomercial sales techniques. The 30 second website version differs in that they aren’t selling anything up front. The tried and true model of giving away something to get a visitor onto the site’s list, THEN offering something on the back-end, or product upgrade for a fee, hasn’t changed. That model makes money for websites every few seconds. The only thing that’s changed is how the offer is delivered.
We’ve all been seduced by advertising at one time or another, but the immediacy of the internet moves the “viewer” from seduction to sales conversion in a way television never could.
